WASHINGTON C.H., Ohio -- A State Highway Patrol trooper is on paid administrative leave after shooting and killing a man during a traffic stop Sunday near Washington Court House.

Trooper James Cress of the Wilmington patrol post stopped Errol Baker II, of Jeffersonville, just before 2 a.m. and asked him to exit his vehicle for sobriety tests.

The patrol said the two struggled before the motorist fired one shot from a handgun and missed the trooper. The trooper shot back and struck the motorist in the upper body.

Baker was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Being placed on paid administrative leave is standard procedure for a state trooper following a fatal shooting.
